As we close out another year, it is fitting that we review everything that took place over the last 52 weeks. Like everyone else, there were highs and lows, excitement and challenges alike, but overall, we close out the year and look forward to the next.
In April, MenAlive welcomed the world debut of Unbreakable, the Untold Stories of Our Community by Andrew Lippa. Unbreakable took place over the course of a century in various parts of the United States. The stories told were true and part of the LGBTQIA+ legacy.
In July, I Am America took to the stage to celebrate life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I Am America marked the retirement of Bob Gunn, MenAlive’s Artistic Director for over 20 years. In fact, Bob had been with MenAlive since it started in 2001. The search was launched for MenAlive’s new Artistic Director, which included candidates from around the United States.
Starting in August, Steve Milloy joined MenAlive as the new Artistic Director. Renowned domestically and internationally, Milloy came to MenAlive with multiple decades of experience in all aspects of music. Milloy has coached and directed singers in schools, churches, theatres, and performance stages across the United States.
Earlier this month, Steve conducted his first MenAlive show and the first show of the 2022-23 season, Merry and Bright: Tinseltown.
Off the stage, MenAlive members participated in two weekend-long retreats that included numerous team-building and outdoor activities. These two camps gave members the opportunity to get to know each other outside of the rehearsal hall. Other events that MenAlive was a part of included OC Aids Walk, OC Pride, and Long Beach Pride.
In July, after a two-year hiatus, MenAlive welcomed back Harmony, the annual fundraising gala. The annual Rich Cook Community Bridge Award is also presented at the gala to a member of the chorus, community, and beyond showing their support for MenAlive and/or the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole.
In September, MenAlive was again invited to perform live on stage at the Hollywood Bowl as part of the ABBA The Concert!
“MenAlive always loves the opportunity to perform at the Hollywood Bowl,” says Mike Auchter, MenAlive President and Chairman. “Each time we’ve been asked to sing at the Bowl, the feeling of excitement and enjoyment are always present.”
Recently, MenAlive welcomed a new Executive Director, Valerie Ousley. Valerie has been a part of the MenAlive family for nearly two decades and welcomed the new opportunity with open arms.
What will 2023 bring for MenAlive? Well, we’d say that’s anyone's guess, but we know for sure, at least two more concerts this season, numerous volunteer opportunities, the annual gala, and much more.
