OCGMC: Accompanist

Background:

Founded in 2001, MenAlive - Orange County Gay Men's Chorus is a non-profit organization committed to its mission - "that through music, men's voices unite to entertain, inform, bring healing, joy, friendship all while building bridges with the community at large". It accomplishes that mission through a series of choral concerts for the public and community outreach.

POSITION AVAILABLE:

MenAlive seeks a dynamic and experienced principal accompanist to support the mission of the Orange County Gay Men's Chorus. Recognized as a model in the LGBTQIA community, the chorus provides a safe space for LGBTQIA individuals, allies and their advocates to come together through music while making a positive impact in our community. OCGMC is a GALA member community chorus made up of 60-100 GBTQIA members and allies who sing TTBB arrangements. The chorus presents three main-stage productions each year in addition to several other outreach engagements.

The principal accompanist reports to the Artistic Director, and must understand and show a strong commitment to fulfilling the mission and vision of MenAlive.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE:

Accompany all rehearsals, including:

  • Weekly Tuesday evening rehearsals (beginning 12 weeks prior to concert performances)

  • Saturday rehearsals (2 each concert)

  • Sectional rehearsals (as needed)

  • Dress and Tech rehearsals (week of concert performances)

  • Weekend chorus retreat (one weekend per year, typically in the fall)

  • Other rehearsals as scheduled

Accompany concert performances, including:

  • Three season concerts – typically December, April and July

  • Additional community and event performances, as scheduled

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience or an interest in accompanying or working with a community-based chorus and with singers/musicians of various musical skills and experience

  • Solid piano technique

  • Ability to play a variety of musical styles

  • Capability to work with a diverse group of volunteers and personalities

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Music (or equivalent experience) with an emphasis in performance or accompanying, or a complementary discipline

  • Interest in coaching singers (individuals and groups)

COMMITMENT:

Anticipated average commitment of 30-34 hours per month

COMPENSATION:

Annual contract payments totaling $10,800 commensurate with experience and final agreement on contracted responsibilities.
